Chapter Sixteen

Hard to Grasp

The next couple of days fell into an uneasy rhythm for Kira. Each morning was spent trying to meditate in the lakeside pavilion, even though she woke up groggy and bleary-eyed from the continued lack of sleep. Then she would meet with Ryn in the afternoon to do an aura reading. In his brutally honest way, he reported no new changes, which didn’t do much to encourage her. Sometimes after going outside, her aura would brighten, as he would call it, but she knew it didn’t last. And she didn’t have much else here at the Spire to make her happy besides practicing and caring for Naga, both of which were more duties than actual fun activities.

In the evenings she would spar with Jun, whose Shadow training Kira was trying hard not to resent, despite knowing that she needed to keep an eye on her negative emotions. But knowing he was learning all kinds of new Shadow magic without her left her with a gaping hole in her thoughts. Outside of lessons, he also met with mages and trainees to talk to them about their proficiencies—it was like he was collecting ideas for powers to try.

Whenever Kira walked through the halls of the Spire, she felt eyes on her and saw whispers traded behind hands. The other acolytes never seemed to want to talk to her, a feeling she knew well from her first days at Gekkō-ji, when everyone thought she was from the then-hated Shadow region.

“People are starting to think you’re really advanced since you’re not in any of the regular lessons,” Jun admitted one evening after Kira broached the subject. She had wondered if they were treating him with the same cold looks. “They... think you’re training with special masters in secret or something.”

That almost hurt more than the truth of her reality.

Commander Aita and her Commonality soldiers constantly followed Kira and Jun as they went about their days. Kira kept her meetings with Ryn inside the Gray Wing, where she could have some privacy as he read her aura. But they followed her and Jun to meditation each morning, and there were two soldiers posted outside the double doors to the wing at all times. It was lucky no one else was allowed to live in the Gray Wing, or surely Commander Aita and her Commonality soldiers would have moved right in with them.

Kira had already gotten Ryn to assess whether Commander Aita and her soldiers were common or not. She wanted to rule out any of them being the Lord of Between in disguise, or one of their magic-using recruits.

Ryn read all of their auras and assured her that they didn’t possess any magic. Kira was fascinated by the process, so had Ryn explain what auras looked like with and without magic.

“Well, all auras are an amalgamation of color, a projection of the soul, and also one’s emotions and personality,” he had explained one afternoon over tea after he had read Aita’s aura. “A mage’s aura is surrounded by a layer of what looks like sparkling jewels.
